A Fireplace Can Be More Than Just A Heat Source

Warming feet in front of a real fire!

A fireplace is a focal point that can add light, warmth and ambiance to any room to really create that cosy and warm feel good factor that appeals to most people. Having a separate heat source in each room also eliminates the complications of modern day technology and there is nothing simpler than putting another log on the fire or allowing a fire to burn itself out when there is no one there to benefit from the warmth.

If you’re lucky enough to have a fireplace to cosy up in front of, firewood can be both an economical and rewarding source of heating fuel.

Imagine the days have grown shorter and the evenings have started to draw in. We’ve just had our first autumn frost, the leaves have started to change colour and are only just beginning to fall. There's a chill in the air, you've just come back from a long walk and now you're sitting back with a mug of hot chocolate. Wouldn't it be cosy to curl up in front of a warm, glowing open fire and watch the flames dance across the logs slowly turning them golden amber. There aren't many more things as relaxing.

Where Our Logs Come From

Firewood is sourced from sustainable woodland

All our wood is coppiced from our own woodland located in the heart of the Cheshire countryside, which contains both hardwood and softwood species of tree.

Wood is an environmentally sustainable, carbon-neutral energy source. When trees in the form of logs, wood pellets or compressed briquettes are burnt, they only emit as much carbon into the atmosphere as they have absorbed whilst growing. In the growing process, saplings, young trees, absorb far more carbon than older trees that have far less new growth. Therefore, managed woodland which is coppiced, or thinned regularly, will be far more beneficial to the environment than one which is left unmanaged and overgrown. Managing woodland not only helps improve the environment, but also creates a vibrant habitat for many varied species of plants, birds and wildlife.

The Types of Firewood We Supply

If you are using firewood to heat a room or create character and atmosphere, the very best firewood to burn is hardwood species like oak, beech and sycamore which have been seasoned for at least 2 years. Seasoning is a process where trees are cut down, split into logs and stacked in piles to air dry outside with some protection from the rain. When it is felled, a tree usually contains around 50% moisture which is reduced to about 20% when the firewood reaches its optimal burning potential through seasoning. Hardwoods like oak, beech and sycamore provide really good firewood because hardwood tends to burn much hotter and more slowly than softwoods like pine.

Pine and other softwoods are better suited to use as kindling, small pieces of wood that contain more sap and catch fire quickly. Good kindling is used for setting light to a fire and burning long enough for the hardwood logs to start to burn.

The firewood logs you get will be mixed hardwoods only, such as beech, sycamore and ash. All our logs are air dried and well seasoned. This means there will be less spitting and less creosote build up in your chimney. It's not the kind of wood you burn that makes the difference, but whether or not the wood has been stored properly and well-seasoned.

All our logs come packed in easily to handle nets or larger bulk bags and are delivered by a professional UK courier company.
